Holistic Music Education
You can Learn by Heart

"My kids jumped right in.  When my 9-year-old said we should do this every week, I knew we had found a winner."

What if you could learn to read music along with your child?

Or perhaps you are a musician yourself, but feel hesitant in your ability to break it down into accessible concepts for your children.

Or maybe you are already a music educator, but feel like you need a new approach to liven up your own classroom!

Inspired by a holistic and developmental approach to literacy, such as is utilized in Waldorf education, Legends of the Staff of Musique brings musical concepts pulled from the Kodály approach to music literacy into your home.  Each level has its own imaginative story in which the musical concepts are cleverly hidden, bringing life and magic to musical terms and pedagogy.  The concepts are reinforced through cultural folk songs, and fun and engaging projects and even recipes!  Children can taste the flavor of the notes in the major scale, or take pride in creating simple musical instruments to accompany their singing!

With Legends of the Staff of Musique, music literacy isn't solely cerebral.
It is experienced with the head, the heart, and the hands.

"[This] is just the gentle program we were looking for.  Thank you for creating such a lovely music curriculum"

Established in 2016, Legends of the Staff of Musique is the first music curriculum tailor made for home education that provides resources for teaching music to children primarily using only our very first instrument... the voice!

In a time where home education is becoming more utilized by families of various economic standings, the subject of music education has become a difficult one, with private lessons often costing hundreds of dollars a month per student.  While private lessons are admittedly worth every penny, not every family has the means, and not every student expresses interest in learning a specific instrument.

Since most music curriculum guides are written with the perspective of classroom instruction, much is lost in translation when attempting to apply classroom techniques to home education.  Many home educators do want to expose their children to music, but find themselves overwhelmed at the prospect of teaching music literacy to their children.  And this overwhelm can be exaggerated when the home educator does not have his or her own background in music.  For this reason, many will pick up a lovely home music curriculum that focuses on simple, easy to use childhood instruments, and promptly place it right back on the shelf.

Legends of the Staff of Musique is written specifically for the home educator who may or may not already read music. It is easily understood by the novice, but not overly simplistic for the accomplished musician. Regardless of where the caregiver is on their own journey of music literacy, this curriculum provides an opportunity to explore the beautiful language of music alongside the child in a wonderfully holistic way.

Curious how
Legends of the Staff of Musique
fits into various holistic homeschooling styles?

Crystal Hosea (or as her students call her, "Mrs. H") has been exploring music her entire life.  She began studying piano at the age of four, and later attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts as a vocal music major, where she fell in love with music as an art form and a language.

Inspired to continue her musical study, Crystal earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Choral-Vocal Studies from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at Long Beach State University, and went on to complete a Teaching Credential in Music. She enjoyed teaching elementary and secondary music in the classroom, private voice lessons, and serving as musical director for after school programs for several years, but eventually took a hiatus from classroom teaching to focus on homeschooling her children.

When she is not teaching music, homeschooling, or writing, Crystal enjoys living the simple life with her husband, children and furry/feathered family on a ranchito in California.
