For students who have completed the Soulful Solfège class, our musical adventures continue in the caverns below the kingdom of Solfeggio in the realm of Ta. There are no musical instruments necessary for this class, the only instrument you will need is your voice!

Hidden in the storyline of the captivating novella, King Ritmo and the Realm of Ta, are musical concepts to discover.  We will read our way through the novella together, and along the way discover how rhythm can be felt in our bodies and a unique musical language we can use to speak it!

Each class will begin with an active listening example of a piece of beloved music from different global regions.  Students will create art based on these examples, and sometimes engage in interpretive dance!  Mrs. H will share some interesting info about the piece, and then it is on to the realm of Ta!

After reading through a chapter of the novella together (emergent readers are encouraged to simply listen) students will create art, sing songs, and put into practice the mystery musical idea hidden within that chapter's story. Between class meetings, to further experience this rhythmic exploration, students will be gradually building a real, working musical instrument throughout the duration of the class. (Some steps will require caregiver supervision/participation)

Inspired by blending the Kodály approach to music education and the Waldorf approach to literacy, the holistic methods in the Magical Language of Music classes provide students with an enjoyable experience that allows them to conceptualize musical concepts in an imaginative way.
Supplies needed for this class:
For each class:
  • Main Lesson Book (A sketchbook works great, or loose papers that can be then bound when completed)
  • Good quality crayons or other colorful drawing medium
  • A print copy or eBook copy of King Ritmo and the Realm of Ta.  Either option can be purchased here.

Supplies for the Traditional Instrument Project:
(A list of when each item is needed will be emailed the week before our first class meeting)
  • Brown Coconut
  • Sandpaper
  • Ribbon
  • Dark-colored Marker
  • Wood polish (a recipe will be sent via email for beeswax polish)
  • Wooden dowels
  • Styrofoam balls** (1 inch in diameter)
  • Hot Glue
  • Rubber bands
  • Felt sheet
  • Planter/Flowerpot (12 inch diameter)
The material for this is up to you.  In the example, we used a heavy-duty plastic planter, but this can also be done with a resin planter or a wooden barrel planter. Whatever material you use, you want to make sure the design is narrower at the bottom than it is on the top.
  • Sandpaper
  • Parchment Paper
  • Fabric (Thin cotton, 24inch by 24 inch square)
  • Beeswax Pellets
  • Blanket (or other material to form a protective barrier for your floor)
  • Embroidery Hoop (12 inch diameter)
  • Duct Tape
  • Ribbon
  • Jute twine (a 200 ft. roll should be plenty.
  • Decorative materials
These are also up to you.  For the example, I used decorative duct tape, but depending on the material of the flower pot you chose you could use paint, stickers, or even a wood burner if you are using a wooden barrel planter.
**If you do not want to use styrofoam balls, there are other options for this portion of the project.  You could create balls using aluminum foil, or even use felt balls instead.  If you use felt balls, you will need to drill a hole the same diameter of the wooden dowels about halfway through the balls.

Tools Necessary for the Traditional Instrument Project:
  • Rubber mallet (Or a regular hammer with a cushioned barrier)
  • Chisel (1 inch)
  • Electric drill (with ½ inch bits)
  • Dull knife (eg. butter knife)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Iron
  • Scissors
